Livestream + Recording
Sunday November 19

Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics is pleased to present evidence-based practices to help counteract the debilitating effects of depression. Our three presenters have been working for decades in the fields of Iyengar Yoga and research into yoga as a complementary treatment for depression.

Dr. Chris Streeter will present an overview of the neurology of depression and how yoga benefits the nervous system. She will share findings from her own research that have demonstrated the positive impact of Iyengar Yoga on the brain and neurotransmitters associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms.

Dr Streeter's presentation will be followed by a yoga practice led by Patrica Walden and Marla Apt. The yoga sequence, an approach that informed Dr Streeter’s as well as other research related to Iyengar Yoga for depression, is based on BKS and Geeta Iyengar’s therapeutic principles. The yoga sequence will include adaptations for varying ages and abilities.

The Body is My Temple – Advanced Retreat

Join Patricia Walden, one of the senior most and respected Iyengar teachers in the U.S., for a 3 day in-person retreat in historic Harrisville, NH.

Patricia’s teaching artfully guides students on an inward journey exploring asana and pranayama to integrate and unify the body and mind.  This unique and intimate retreat gives students an opportunity to delve deeper in a bucolic New England setting.

The omnipresent Isvara, who pervades every atom of the universe, also resides in every cell of the human body. The body is thus a temple that houses the divine spirit.
— BKS IYENGAR, Arogya Yoga

Patricia first met BKS Iyengar in 1976 and has been a devoted student and beloved teacher since that time. She aspires to teach in a way where students feel seated in their hearts and fearless.

Harrisville is a unique mill village that preserves the scale and setting of the numerous mill villages that were built on waterpower sites throughout New England prior to the Civil War. Today the village retains its two early textile mills together with a range of related buildings – boarding houses, workers’ cottages, owners’ houses, a store, meeting house, school, dams and mill ponds – in an isolated rural setting. Harrisville’s significance as one of the best-preserved mill building/communities in America was recognized in 1977 with a National Historic Landmark designation.

in addition to yoga, participants can enjoy a catered vegetarian meals, followed by a hike on surrounding trails or walk in the scenic village to Harrisville Pond. For the more adventurous, Sunday afternoon could include a hike up scenic Mount Monadnock or other local trails.

Moving into Silence: A Journey Through the Vayus with Patricia Walden

Sunday, August 6
1:30-3:30pm Brookline & Livestream

Join Patricia in a practice that will use the five movements of prana (vital life force) known as vayu (wind) to reach an inner silence.

Each of the five vayus flow in different directions and in varying regions of the body.  When they are functioning harmoniously, the vayus support health and vitality while the more subtle vayus support spiritual elevation. In this workshop, we will learn how to engage with the vayus in our practice so as to lead to natural, profound silence.

Level: At least 1-2 years of Iyengar yoga experience. Participants should be able to push up into Urdhva Dhanurasana. This workshop is not ideal for those with shoulder issues or injuries.

Required Props: Bolster, 4 blankets, 2 blocks, 1 belt & a chair

Yoga & Aging | Shifting Perspective: Moving from Darkness to Light with Yoga

Workshop: May 7, 2023 • 1-3pm
Learning Lab: May 21, 2023

In this workshop, renowned Iyengar Yoga teacher Patricia Walden will teach students how their yoga practice can help lift the veil on one of the most common aging woes: depression. As we age and difficulties arise in the body, we can enter a state of depression.

Yoga has the tools to help us uplift our heart while lifting our physical thoracic cage and fostering physical and mental wellbeing.

Patricia will show what can be done to bring back a zest for life when one struggles with these feelings.

Yoga helps us to stay seated in your truth – to stay with your heart and with that comes a resilience, an ability to withstand adversity. Yoga not only has the capacity to nourish and nurture our bodies but also yoga creates buoyancy in our heart and vibrancy in our brain.
— Patricia Walden

Patricia Walden began her study with BKS Iyengar in 1976. Respected as one of the most senior Iyengar Yoga teachers worldwide, Patricia’s dedication to her teacher and to the subject of yoga has defined her life’s journey. Patricia was listed by Yoga Journal as one of the 25 American Yoga Originals who have helped shape yoga in the West. Time Magazine has also featured her work with yoga and healing. Patricia has a special interest in yoga, specifically for women and yoga for depression.
